Why take music lessons?
Playing a musical instrument has been shown to accelerate brain development in children, improve memory and attention, engage cognitive and psychomotor function, kindle creativity and artistic thinking, and provide emotional and personal fulfillment and enjoyment. Music instruction also encourages self-discipline and time management skills that are useful beyond the practice room.
Why take lessons from Tyler Hartley?
I have my bachelor's degree in music performance and over ten years of teaching experience with students of all ages and ability levels. I have humbly studied under and worked alongside some of the world's leading teaching artists and performers, and continue to attend masterclasses and conferences to further expand my own playing and teaching abilities.
I believe that in order to teach at a high level, one must be able to practice their craft at a high level. In addition to teaching, I perform professionally in a variety of settings, including orchestra, chamber, and solo. Because I must constantly overcome my own personal obstacles as a performing musician, I am equipped to helping my students overcome these same obstacles, whether they be physical, mental, or emotional.
As a harp teacher, my goal is to help students develop technical mastery of the harp, an understanding of fundamental music theory, and instill and nurture a lifelong love and appreciation for music.
What can I expect if I join Tyler Hartley's harp studio?
Lessons take place on a weekly basis at either my Woodstock or Roswell teaching studio. My students play in harp ensemble and solo recitals twice a year. I will take each individual's goals and abilities into account when developing lesson plans, but I will always push students to challenge themselves by acting with deliberation and mindfulness, structuring practice time effectively and efficiently, and playing expressively and authentically. Regardless of age, goals, or ability level, consistent daily practice is essential.
Many of my students have been accepted into prestigious summer music festivals, youth orchestras, and music schools, including the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra, Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra, All State Orchestra. Young Artist's Harp Seminar, the Summer Harp Academy, Interlochen Arts Academy, Boston University's Tanglewood Institute, and Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University.
Do I need a harp at home?
Practice is the most important part of music, and having a harp at home is required for practice. There are many rental and purchase options available in a variety of sizes and prices. As harpist-in-residence of The Atlanta Harp Center, I can advise you on finding a harp to purchase or rent that will meet your musical needs and fit in your budget.
